Introduction
A conflict of interest occurs when a member’s interests conflict with their responsibility to act in the best interests of the Adelaide Critics Circle Inc (“Circle”).
Conflicts of interest are not uncommon, and they do not need to present a problem to the Circle as long as they are openly and effectively managed. It is the policy of the Circle that conflicts of interest be avoided and that any such conflicts (where they do arise) do not conflict with the member’s obligations to the Circle, especially in relation to nominating artists/organisations for the annual ACColade Awards.
The Circle will manage conflicts of interest by requiring members to:
• avoid conflicts of interest where possible
• identify and disclose any conflicts of interest
• carefully manage any conflicts of interest
• not nominate an artist/organisation for an ACColade Award or participate in related decision making processes where the member believes they have a real or actual conflict of interest in relation to the artist/organisation.
Potential conflicts of interest are categorised into four groups as follows:
1) Relationship/Relative – a member of the art’s community or the Circle that is a family relation or partner, who may (at one time or another) be considered for an award, and for whom the ‘conflicted’ member of the Circle would abstain from voting for.
2) Employment/Education – ongoing participation with or payment by any employer or institution which may (at one time or another) be considered for an award, and for whom the ‘conflicted’ member of the Circle would abstain from voting for.
3) Affiliate / Member / Representative – any group or organisation with which a member may be affiliated or representing, or indeed on the committee or board of, which may (at one time or another) be considered for an award, and for whom the ‘conflicted’ member of the Circle would abstain from voting for.
4) Personal – a conflict of a personal nature that is not otherwise appropriately categorised.
As at 2 September 2024, members of the Circle declared the following conflicts of interest:
